During the early to mid Empire, consular dating on coinage was common, but by the end of the third and the beginning of the fourth century, consular dates rarely appear on Roman coinage. In addition to the consular date, the emperor is also shown wearing the trabea triumphalis and holding the imperial eagle-tipped scepter. The trabea was an elaborately embroidered piece of clothing in either red or purple, and only worn by high government officials, such as consuls. It subsequently evolved into the ceremonial loros, which was worn by the imperial family during Byzantine times.
